INTRODUCTION TO BASIC ELECTRONICS
Definition of Electronics
Electronics is the branch of science that deals with the study of the flow and control of electrons (electricity), and the behavior of electrons in vacuums, gases, and semiconductors.
This control of electrons is achieved using devices that resist, carry, select, steer, switch, store, manipulate, and utilize electrical energy.
Electronics may seem difficult at first, but it can be learned without memorizing complex theories or physics formulas. The real focus of electronics is understanding how things work.
Electronics can be described as both a science and an art—making what once seemed impossible become functional. Devices such as televisions, AM/FM radios, computers, and mobile phones are all products of electronics.
Today, we are surrounded by electronic devices in our daily lives.
Why Learn Electronics?
Learning how electronic devices work can be enjoyable and highly practical. With basic electronics knowledge, you can:
- Build useful electronic projects
- Make better use of electronic devices
- Repair faulty equipment
- Improve job and business opportunities
Understanding What Happens Inside Electronic Devices
An important part of learning electronics is the ability to visualize what happens inside electronic equipment. Many electronic processes occur at a sub-atomic level, which cannot be seen directly.
To understand these processes, you must form a mental picture of how signals are switched on and off, amplified, or reduced. Amplification and attenuation simply mean making signals stronger or weaker.
Source and Load Concept
Inside any electronic device, operation can be described as a source delivering power to a load.
The source is where energy comes from, such as a battery or power supply. The load is the component that uses that energy to produce sound, heat, light, images, or motion.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this lesson, you should be able to:
- Describe the structure of a simple atom
- Recognize a series resistor circuit
- Calculate current in a series circuit
- Determine power dissipation in a resistor using color codes
- Measure voltage across a resistor or circuit
- Measure current through a resistor circuit
- Identify different types of switches
- Trace circuit paths in switched circuits
